Newton – an accidental career is a portrait of the Mexican sculptor Rosa Gurrola (*1947), who has been active as part of Mexico City’s progressive art scene since the 1970s. For a long time, she was primarily known there as the producer and archivist of the works of her husband, the director Juan José Gurrola (1935 – 2007). In contrast, her own artistic work, which combines conceptual approaches with technical precision and a pronounced sense of humor, has gone relatively unnoticed.
The documentary is an intimate portrait of a female artist’s biography in Mexico at the end of the 20th century. Through Rosa Gurrola’s stories and insights into her work, Newton – an accidental career shows the complex relationship between the person, the artist and her work.
